Zannier Phum Baitang
Forty-five stilted villas in working rice paddies, on ground the house measures two different ways.
Zannier Phum Baitang stands in rice paddies outside Siem Reap, minutes from the temples of Angkor, with forty-five stilted and thatched villas on it, twenty of them carrying a plunge pool. The paddies are not scenery: the rice served in the restaurants is grown on the ground the estate holds, which puts this record in the small group here whose land is in production rather than in reserve. The Sunset Lounge is a century-old farmhouse taken down and rebuilt on the site, and the villas were built with salvaged timber.
The area is the problem, and it is the house's own. One page of the operator's material gives eight acres of gardens and rice paddies; a later section of the same material gives eight hectares. Eight hectares is about twenty acres, so the two figures differ by two and a half times, and this register carries both without choosing - the same discipline it applied to Six Senses Samui, where a factsheet and a website disagreed. The difference between a three-hectare garden and an eight-hectare farm is the difference between a setting and a holding.
The land is in production. The rice grown on this ground is served in the estate's own restaurants, which makes these paddies a working holding rather than a view arranged around a hotel.
The house measures itself twice. Eight acres in one place and eight hectares in another, in the operator's own material, is a factor of two and a half. Both are carried and neither is chosen.
Who it is not for
Phum Baitang is wrong for anyone who needs the ground settled, because the house publishes two figures for it that differ by two and a half times. It is wrong for travellers who want to be away from the crowds, as Angkor and its visitors are minutes off. It is wrong for anyone who wants a view out, since the horizon here is paddy. For a Cambodian holding whose acreage is not in question, Shinta Mani Wild keeps eight hundred and sixty-five acres of the Cardamoms.
Sources
- Operator and specialist material - the resort is set within eight acres of gardens and rice paddies, and a later sustainability section of the same material cites eight hectares; forty-five private stilted, thatched villas, twenty with their own outdoor plunge pools; paddies surround the property and the restaurants use rice grown there; the Sunset Lounge is a reconstructed century-old farmhouse; villas built with salvaged wood; described as away from the city's bustle yet minutes from the temples of Angkor
- NOT STATED - the opening year, the distance from Siem Reap in kilometres, and whether the paddies are owned or farmed under an arrangement with their owners. None is carried.
